Ancient Phoenician city (modern Jebeil), 32
km/20 mi N of Beirut, Lebanon. Known to the
Assyrians and Babylonians as Gubla, it had a
thriving export of cedar and pinewood to
Egypt as early as 1500 BC. In Roman times it
boasted an amphitheatre, baths, and a temple
dedicated to an unknown male god, and was
known for its celebration of the resurrection
of Adonis, worshipped as a god of vegetation.
